Hipsters have an important task at the end of the industrial era: through their unconventional views, experimental new structures in work and private environment, and mostly high values, they have moderated the transition from industrialization to digitization. This also includes a new way of thinking. Digital structures are different from those in industrialization. Industrialization was based on efficiency, which is why metropolises and large companies and production processes have emerged. Rather, the digital world offers trial-and-error possibilities, since you can often try something out very quickly with a small lever. This requires a new way of thinking and, above all, breaking down old thinking structures. We owe a lot to the absolute nonconformism of the hipsters.
They have shown us how it works “differently”. Especially in New-Work and New-Living hipsters will accompany us for a while. They are not least responsible for the craft and maker movements and bring us into contact with new banking and currency systems.
On the other hand, the digital era also needs a structure. We need a kind of “traffic rules”. As with the car, which was introduced at the beginning of industrialisation and, without rules known to drivers and pedestrians alike, caused more turmoil than progress. Here the non-conformism of the hipsters is counterproductive. This is where the gentleman and the gentlewoman come into play. But not in the classic version in English Tweed, but in version 4.0.
The classic “gentle values” remain: a high ethics, attentive, friendly interaction with the environment, commitment, chivalry, sustainable considerations, today we rather speak of “consequence awareness” and friendliness in general. Naturally adapted to modern times. Today it is no longer about clay pigeon shooting and luxurious cars, but about yoga, relaxed jogging and the conversion of cities into ecosystems worth living in. The gentleman and the gentlewoman of today ride bicycles, e-bikes and represent alternative traffic concepts.
In contrast to hipsters, however, they build on sustainable structures that they innovate, but do not continually disrupt, so they do not destroy them to rebuild them, they develop as organically as possible. They bring peace and reason as well as a sense of proportion into the fast digital times. Their innovation focus is less on the new technology than on the quality of life of all people, the prosperity of society as a whole.
Gentleman and Gentlewoman will thus ensure that the restlessness and anxiety in society slowly disappear again, that right-wing tendencies become like moderate structures. They ensure that people get a perspective again. Because clearly, without such a perspective, they only pay attention to themselves. Only with a perspective can people re-integrate into the development of society as a whole and commit themselves to something other than themselves.
So we are currently in the transition from the hipster era to the gentleman and gentlewoman era. Both work hand in hand and complement each other well. And it cannot be ruled out that hipsters will become gentlemen and gentlewoman. They will also develop a new style. Also fashionable. So something will change in the next few years, the public scenery will change.
Which, by the way, is nothing fundamentally new: the two basic types of hipster and gentleman alternate historically over and over again. So the hipsters used to be the hippies. It is important to understand that our society benefits from the interplay of the two types, renews itself and builds up stability and prosperity again. At the beginning of this phase of prosperity, stimulated by the hipsters and increasingly developed by gentlemen and gentlewomen, we stand now.
